How Ibsen delivers environmentally robust spectrometers

Raman spectrscopy applications

Ibsen delivers environmentally robust spectrometers built for demanding applications such as offshore wind turbines, industrial plants, and aerospace sensing system. Robustness begins with proven material combinations, stable assembly processes, and extensive tolerance analysis. Every new spectrometer design undergoes environmental qualification, with customer‑specific profiles available for customized designs. By choosing Ibsen as supplier of your spectrometer, you benefit from a platform based on proven, previously qualified design and assembly methods, ensuring fast development, predictable performance, and no unexpected issues during final qualification. All manufacturing is performed under ISO 9001, ensuring consistent, traceable, and repeatable production. The result is a spectrometer whose environmental robustness is engineered, verified, and delivered with confidence.

A long tradition of building spectrometers for demanding environments

From the very beginning, Ibsen’s spectrometers were designed for harsh, unpredictable environments rather than protected laboratory benches. Robustness has been built in from day one. Our earliest instruments were created for applications where vibration, temperature swings , humidity, and mechanical shock were unavoidable. That heritage continues to define how we engineer and qualify spectrometers today.

Over the years, Ibsen spectrometers have proven their reliability in offshore wind turbines exposed to constant vibration and rapid weather changes, in industrial process lines where dust, moisture, and mechanical stress are part of the daily routine, and in aerospace platforms where stability under extreme conditions is essential.

This long tradition matters because it means every new design starts from a foundation that has already been tested, refined, and validated in real‑world use. The environmental challenges our customers face are familiar engineering problems we have solved repeatedly across industries. When customers choose Ibsen, they benefit from decades of experience delivering spectrometers that perform.

Robustness by design: proven materials, proven assemblies, proven stability

Robustness at Ibsen begins long before environmental testing. Material selection is guided by how components behave together under temperature cycling, humidity exposure, and long term mechanical stress. Adhesives, mounts, and interfaces are chosen because they have shown — repeatedly — that they maintain alignment and optical performance over years of operation. The assembly processes themselves are equally disciplined: each step is documented, repeatable, and based on methods that have already passed qualification in earlier designs.

Before any hardware is built, extensive tolerance analysis is performed to predict how the spectrometer will respond to environmental loads. These simulations allow us to identify and eliminate sensitivity early in the design phase, ensuring that stability is engineered into the architecture rather than added afterwards.
By choosing Ibsen as supplier of your spectrometer, you benefit from a design approach grounded in proven materials, proven assemblies, and proven stability — giving you a predictable, low risk foundation for achieving environmental robustness.

Environmental qualification based on international standards

Every new spectrometer design from Ibsen undergoes a structured environmental qualification program to verify that the instrument performs reliably under the conditions it was designed for. Qualification is carried out on a few units to ensure repeatability and to confirm that robustness is inherent to the design rather than dependent on a single build. For custom made spectrometers the test profiles can be specified by the customers. The table below shows an example of a test profile based on the IEC 60068 of standards. These tests provide a well‑established, internationally recognized framework for demonstrating environmental stability.

ItemRequirementComment
Storage temperature-40°C ... 85°CIn accordance with IEC 60068-2-2 and IEC 60068-2-1
Operating temperature0°C ... 50°CNon-condensing
Damp heat5-95 %RH, at +20- +55 °C, non-condensing, 6 cycles,In accordance with IEC 60068-2-66
Shock20 gn, duration 11 msIn accordance with IEC 60068-2-27
Vibration9 g, 20-2000 Hz, 20 sweep cycles in each axisIn accordance with IEC 60068-2-6

In general, Ibsen’s opto-mechanical designs can withstand a wide operating and storage temperature range but, the overall specification may be limited by the detector chip used.

ISO‑certified manufacturing ensures consistent, repeatable robustness

Environmental robustness is only meaningful if it is delivered consistently in every unit that leaves the factory. At Ibsen, manufacturing is carried out under a disciplined quality system certified to ISO 9001, ensuring that all processes, documentation, and traceability are maintained at a high and repeatable standard. Every assembly step, bonding method, and inspection routine is documented and controlled so that the stability verified during qualification is reproduced reliably in volume production.

For customers in the medical‑device industry, Ibsen is also certified to ISO 13485 as a component supplier. This means that our manufacturing processes, documentation practices, and traceability systems meet the stringent requirements needed for optical components used in regulated medical applications. The same rigor benefits all customers: stable processes, controlled interfaces, and predictable performance across batches.

Environmental qualification FAQ

General questions about environmental qualification

Yes, for componentsYes,wearequalifiedasaciomponent Yes, we are qualified as a component supplier. You can read more about our quality management, ISO Certifications and Compliance here.

By default we typically use IEC 60068. But we are open to discuss other references per customer demand.

We typically perform storage temperature, operating temperature , damp heat, vibration and shock testing per 60068. See table here for an example. If required operating tests can also include varying atmospheric pressure and advanced shock.

We typically use 3 units but, the customer can request that more units are used.

These depend on the specific spectrometer and are often determined by the detector. Common ranges are are 0°C – 50°C operating, but extended to -40°C to 75°C for special cases, and -40°C – +85°C storage, extended down to -55°C.

Ibsen’s OEM spectrometers are supplied as non‑IP‑rated optical modules intended for integration into the customer’s own enclosure. Environmental protection such as IP sealing, dust protection, or splash protection is provided by the customer’s instrument housing.
