Meet Tobias Buchmann, PhD and former postdoc at DTU. He worked in close collaboration with Hamamatsu Photonics to develop next generation detectors, blending applied engineering in physics with fundamental research. The path seemed set for a long academic career… but life had other plans.

Working with a private company opened Tobias’ eyes to the industrial world, and about six months ago, he made a pivotal career move. Despite having sworn off sales, especially as the son of a father who spent over 45 years in the field, Tobias found himself drawn to a new challenge as a business developer at Ibsen Photonics. But would it be the right job for him?

“At first, I was afraid it wouldn’t stimulate me intellectually the same way academia did, to be honest. But then I realized what this job is about: Meeting all kinds of companies and quickly gaining a deep understanding of what they do. Oh, you’re measuring blood? Then I need to understand chemistry, biology, and a lot of things I haven’t encountered before.”

Sales at Ibsen aren’t about pushing a product here and there or repeating sales material that is already online.

“My main focus is to identify the next high-volume customer, primarily in the German-speaking region due to my background. It’s about discovering who’s out there, understanding what they do, and building strong networks. That’s a great challenge.”

Twice a month, Tobias travels abroad and attends trade shows.

“That’s one of my favorite parts of the job—traveling, meeting customers, visiting their facilities, seeing their products, and having face-to-face discussions. It’s a bit like dating: you meet people, and sometimes it just clicks. That’s incredibly satisfying.”

What Tobias values most today is the thrill of the unknown, the excitement of meeting potential new customers, and the supportive work environment at Ibsen.

“I’m still learning, but I’ve grown into my new role quickly. I’m very happy with my choice – a whole new world has opened to me.”
